Our Mission

Every young person deserves the opportunity to be seen and heard.
Youth Lens Initiative provides free, in-person photography and visual storytelling workshops for middle school students who lack access to creative tools and mentorship.

We believe a single photograph can capture emotion, identity, and lived experience in ways words cannot. Through photography, students learn not only how to create images, but how to understand themselves and the world around them.

Mentorship Matters

Learning is faster and more meaningful with guidance. Youth Lens mentors support students through honest feedback, shared experience, and encouragement.

Why I Started Youth Lens

Hi! My name is Tim Chen, and I am the founder of the Youth Lens Initiative. I got into photography at the end of middle school, when I taught myself the basics of camera settings, composition, and editing software. I fell in love with photography because it gave me an outlet to express myself and communicate experiences that were difficult to put into words.

Having mentors had a significant impact on my photography journey. They shared not only their perspective but also their mistakes, so I wouldn't have to make the same ones. This taught me the importance of having a mentor, especially in creative fields where guidance and encouragement matter.

It came to my attention that not everyone has the same access to photography or a creative career. Especially in under-resourced neighborhoods, kids lack access to cameras or mentors. That's why I developed the Youth Lens Initiative—to give students the creative outlet and mentorship I was fortunate to have.

The Power of Mentorship

Learning from those who've walked the path before us

Mentor working with students

"Mentors don't just teach technical skills, but they share their journey, their perspective, and the lessons they've learned along the way. That guidance and encouragement can make all the difference in a young person's creative development."

Engaged students learning

"Visual storytelling shapes how we perceive the world and understand one another. When we give students the tools to tell their stories through photography, we give them a voice that can reach across any barrier."
